WIZARDS, GIANTS, AND ELVES

Activity Level: high
QEP: Competency I
Equipment: playing area
Formation: lines
Tactics: change of direction, decision-making, strategy

Description: There are two teams that line up in front of each other spaced 3 metres in the middle of the playing area. Each line must determine in secret whether they want to be wizards, giants, or elves. After both teams have chosen, they line up in front of each other and they all mime the characters one by one and say their names, and then they must show the character that they chose. In case that both teams choose the same character, they must both have a backup. In this game, the wizards are stronger than the giants, therefore the giants must run away and go into their safe zone all the way at the end of the playing area without being tagged. The giants however are stronger than the elves, so the elves have to run away from the giants. Finally, the elves are stronger than the wizards, therefore the wizards must run away from the elves. When someone gets tagged, the person switches over to the other line until only one player is left in one of the lines.

Layer 1:
  • have the students practice changing directions and running away while not running into each other

Progressions:
  • use different movement patterns such as hopping or skipping
  • make the distance between lines smaller/bigger
  • make the safety zone further away

Safety:
  • make sure that the safety zone is a good distance away from the wall so that the students do not run into it
  • students should always keep their heads up when running
  • use soft tags
