SWAMP MONSTER

Activity Level: low
QEP: Competency II
Equipment: parachute
Formation: circle
Tactics: moving parachute, crawling

Description: A large parachute is opened and set on the floor. Every student sits down with legs under the parachute, holds on to a small part and must shake it lightly to create little waves that represent the swamp. One student is chosen to be the swamp monster, and goes under the parachute to catch his or her prey! As the little waves form, the monster starts to move around, and one by one starts touching people's feet, who then are “devoured” by the monster, and become hungry monsters themselves. The game ends when there is only one person left outside of the parachute, and then he or she becomes the new swamp monster.

Layer 1:
  • practice different movement patterns with the parachute, such as making a dome, big waves, small waves, etc.

Layer 2:
  • when touched from the swamp monsters, the students scream and pretend to be dragged into the swamp to add more effect to the game

Safety:
  • when under the parachute, make sure students are careful when moving around to not hit each other
  • the swamp monsters should only lightly touch someone's foot; they do not actually need to pull them in
